The Galion History Center invites the community to a special evening celebrating local history, culture, and connection with the unveiling of our newest exhibit: Galion Barbershops.
Join us on Friday, May 29 at 6:00 p.m. for a featured presentation by Dr. Margaret Sumner of The Ohio State University at Marion, titled:
“Cutting Hair & Creating Culture: How Black Barbers Forged Political & Social Networks in Early Galion.”
This engaging talk will explore the vital role barbershops played in shaping community life—far beyond haircuts. In early Galion, Black barbers created spaces that fostered conversation, influence, and connection, helping to build powerful social and political networks within the town.
Dr. Sumner’s presentation will take place inside the Historic Grace Church at 6:00 p.m., followed by the official opening of the exhibit at the Galion History Museum.
This event is part of our ongoing participation in America 250, highlighting the local stories that contribute to our nation’s history.
Admission is donation-based, and all are welcome.
Come experience an evening where history comes to life—through stories of community, culture, and the spaces that brought people together.
